27th Annual Spooktacular

The Utica Zoo is hosting its 27th Annual Spooktacular event from Friday October 17th through Sunday the 19th. The event takes place at the Utica Zoo from 6 to 9PM on Friday and Saturday, and Sunday from 12-4PM. The Zoo will open at Noon on Sunday.

This year will feature a Carnival of Fear Hayride that will be sure to scare even the bravest of souls. 13 Trick-or-Treat Stations will be located around the Zoo passing out candy and treats. Saturday, The Band WICKED will be at the event, signing autographs and passing out souvenir pictures.  On Sunday, there will be an Autumn Avenue consisting of arts, crafts, and baked goods. Whitesboro Fun Pix will be on site, taking photos to capture Spooktacular memories.

Spooktacular will include new entertainment this year from Maria Christina’s School of Dance, who will perform the world famous Thriller dance throughout the Zoo. Winning pumpkins from The Great Utica Pumpkin Carve will be on display. A hay bale maze will be located in the Children’s Zoo section. Voss’ at the Zoo will be open, and there will be other vendors on site offering empanadas, pizzas, gyros, roasted nuts, lemonade and popcorn. The Remsen Social Club’s five piece band will be performing bluegrass music with banjos, harmonicas, and harps.

Zoo admission for the event is $3.00 per person, with infants at no charge. A members-only line is offered this year, so purchase a membership today! (No membership discounts apply for event admission.)  Cash, checks, and major credit cards will be accepted for admission and gift shop purchases. Voss’ and vendors are cash only with ATM on grounds. Free parking will be at the Zoo all three days. Additional free parking will be available with a shuttle from the Parkway Rec Center and MVCC.  Don’t miss the event of the season!

Wolf Awareness Week 10/12 to 10/18
    October 14, 2014

It’s Wolf Awareness Week at the Utica Zoo. Although they are essential to the health of the ecosystem and keeping herbivore populations in check, wolves have been the subject of intense persecution throughout the centuries, and most species are either threatened or endangered due to myths and misunderstandings. Less than 100 individuals currently live in the wild. Mexican wolves are the most endangered gray wolf subspecies in North America, and our three females; Bella, Sierra and Aztec, are among the last of their kind. After becoming extinct in the wild during the mid-1900s, Mexican wolves are finally making a small comeback in Arizona and New Mexico, but there is still a long way to go.
