World Turtle Day @ Turtle Exhibit
May 23 @ 12:00 PM – 1:00 PM
World Turtle Day @ Turtle Exhibit

Saturday, May 23rd is World Turtle Day! Founded in 2000 by the American Tortoise Rescue, World Turtle Day is meant to educate others about turtles and tortoises, as well as raise awareness of the threats to their survival in the wild. Turtles and tortoises have one of the best defensive designs in the animal kingdom, so much so that they have remained virtually unchanged for millions of years. But while their hard, bony shell may protect them against their natural predators, it doesn’t always save them from habitat destruction and over-collection for the pet trade. If you ever do consider getting a turtle or tortoise for a pet, be sure to buy one that is captive bred from a reputable store or breeder, as well as research how large the species will get (some can grow to over 150 lbs!) and their dietary requirements. Turtles and tortoises are some of the longest lived vertebrates in the world, with one Galapagos tortoise individual living to almost 170 years of age! This Saturday, come to the zoo and learn more about these fascinating reptiles with a presentation at the tortoise exhibit at Noon. Meet one of our three African sulcata tortoises up close and even feed him his favorite treat!
