International Vulture Awareness Day
Sep 6 @ 2:00 PM – 2:30 PM

international vulture

This Sunday September 6th is International Vulture Awareness Day at the Utica Zoo! Although far from the most glamorous bird, vultures play an essential role in the environment, serving as the “clean-up crew” and consuming carcasses that could otherwise spread diseases. Our Ruppell’s griffon vulture, Princess, is one of the larger species of African vulture, with a wingspan of 8 feet and weighing up to 20 pounds. They are also the highest flying bird species, and have been recorded flying at an altitude of 37,000 feet above sea level. Unfortunately, Ruppell’s griffon vultures, along with many other vulture species, are now considered to be endangered due to poisoning, hunting for trade and habitat loss. Learn more about vulture conservation worldwide, and come and visit Princess as she enjoys some fun enrichment in her exhibit at 2pm!
