American Wetlands Month
May 7 @ 11:00 AM – 12:00 PM

American Wetlands Month was created in 1991 to “celebrate the vital importance of wetlands to the Nation’s ecological, economic, and social health and to educate people about the value of wetlands as a natural resource.” (US EPA). To many people wetlands may seem like a waste land, good for nothing but breeding mosquitos.  To biologists and ecologists, however, they are so much more. Wetlands are places full of fascinating plants and animal species as well as a vital part of an ecosystem. They purify water and act as natural flood control systems. They act as a nursery area for many species of birds, amphibians and fish. They provide a resting area for thousands of migrating birds and a hunting ground for many wildlife species. Wetlands are also becoming increasingly valuable as recreation areas for people. Visit the Utica Zoo on Sunday May 7th  at 11:00 AM and celebrate wetlands month with us.

Girl Scout Day at Utica Zoo
May 13 @ 11:00 AM – 3:00 PM

Scouts will have the opportunity to learn all about the animals who live at the Utica Zoo, their natural habitats, and how we care for them. Meet the many women who work to make the zoo a premier educational and animal-care facility. We will also be showcasing our ‘Badge in a Day’ programs so that leaders can find out how to use the zoo a resource for completing environmental and animal themed badges. The price of the program includes admission to the zoo and participation in the many activities going on throughout the day.
