Utica Zoo is seeking a creative and energetic educator to join our team. The Educator reports to the Director of Education and Visitor Experience.

This position will generally be scheduled Thursday-Monday with some evenings as needed.
This position is Full Time: Hourly, Non-Exempt, and benefit eligible.


  • Hosting Zoo birthday parties
  • Developing and hosting conservation themed events and educational programs
  • Work with the Education Director to develop graphics, newsletters and other education materials.
  • On-grounds and outreach animal presentations
  • Other duties as needed; such as scheduling education programs, managing volunteers, helping with zoo camp and writing lesson plans.
  • Other duties as assigned.


The ideal candidate will be assertive and proactive, results oriented and resolution focused, structured, yet flexible, with good follow-through and time management skills.

  • Minimum of 4-year degree in related field
  • Must be comfortable working with animals
  • Must be able to present programs to children and adults of all ages and abilities
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to exercise good judgment and tact in working with other staff, volunteers, children, parents, teachers and the general public
  • Ability and willingness to work weekends, evenings and special events as the schedule demands
  • Ability to relate positively with a diverse staff and diverse groups of visitors
  • Must be able to walk, stand, sit, kneel, stoop, crawl, twist, bend, climb stairs and ladders and carry up to 50 lbs.
  • Must successfully pass a background check and must have a valid, current driver’s license.
