The Utica Zoo is proud to announce its new animals and additions for 2013. Over the last six months, the Zoo has been and continues to build exhibits and acquire new animals for its collection. New animals include Hartmann’s Mountain Zebra, Bennett’s Wallaby, Ring-tailed Lemur, & female White-napped Crane. The Zoo also welcomes new additions, the Nigerian Dwarf Goat kid and California Sea Lion pup which are now periodically on exhibit. The Zoo also presents the new Mini Barn which can be found in the Children’s Zoo. This barn will replicate “A Day in the Life of a Farm” by featuring animals commonly found on the farm such as the Vietnamese Pot-bellied Pig, Barn Owl, multiple types of Chicken, and more.
The father and son pair of Hartmann’s Mountain Zebra came from the San Diego Safari Park, which along with the San Diego Zoo is run by the Zoological Society of San Diego.
The Bennett’s Wallaby came to the Utica Zoo from their native country of New Zealand.
The Zoo is now home to three Ring-tailed Lemurs; two of which are brothers. They came to the Zoo from St. Catherine’s Island, a 14,000 acre island owned by the St. Catherine’s Island Foundation. The island acts as a safe haven for endangered species and is off-limits to the public in an effort to revive the species’ dwindling numbers.
